Media theories are useful to integrate into a film opening and they help us understand more about the media sphere, the one that I found most appealing is:
Symbolic Code: signs or symbols within a production that represents opposition or antithesis.
Ex: Using color palettes in the Barbie movie, bright pink when Barbies are in power but a darker color palette when the Kens take over
| Warner Bros. Pictures. (2023). Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken in Barbie [Photograph]. Warner Bros. |
| Warner Bros. Pictures. (2023). Ryan Gosling as Ken in a white faux-fur coat with other Kens in Barbie [Photograph]. Warner Bros. |
This theory can be useful for our film opening because it not only utilizes color theory but also objects. With this theory we wont have to tell our audience what the character is feeling, we can use colors and signs to demonstrate their state of mind. This also limits the use of dialogue or narrative we might need to use to address context. We could use this exact example to contrast the difference between both characters emotions, feelings and lives.
