Research on Fantasy Genre

 Research on Fantasy Genre

Fantasy might be the oldest genre, it goes back to thousands of years ago when people who had no other form of the entrataintment we have now, they relied on telling stories that became folks and myths. Sooner, early authors began to write fantasy novels thgat shaped what we know about fantasy today. Then, fantasy started appearing in films as early as the 1900s such as Disney and in 1980s live-action fantasy like The NeverEnding Story introduced serious fantasy themes. Now since 2000s fantasy has been an popular genre around the world.

Target Audience of Fantasy

Most of today's fantasy films are based on common old tales that have been passed down from generations. When you think about it fantasy films consist stories about supernatural world where magic exist. Most of the target audience of this genre are teen and young adulst however, some of the biggest fantasy films come from books release years ago so, many adult fanatics enjoy thes types of movies. Kids are also a big audience to fantasies with a lighter tone anf farytale stories. The biggest reason why this genre is consumed is to "scape" from the real world and enter worlds of imaginations.

Fantasy Conventions - Content

Magic and supernatural creatures such as powers, dragons, fairies, wizards. These magical elements are essential in Fanstasy as it tells the audience they have entered a magical world where reality does not exist, supernatural creatures are important to tell the audience what kind of world they are watching, unlike other genres fantasy can be different in every film but it still contains similar content.

Ex:

How to train your dragon (live action) starts of by adressing the protagionist life as a village of vickings that kill dragons, This introductions of the films tell the audience that the world of the movie contains vickings and dragons which are common factors of fantasy myths.

Fantasy Conventions - Production Techniques

Costume and set design are essential in a fantasy film, to actually sold the experience of entering another reality to the audience, the costume and setting evokes the myhtical aesthetic of the film. The soundtrack is also a must that cannot be left behind, without the music the audience will only see the fantasy but hearing it it as important as seeing it on the screen.

Ex:

In the first movie of Harry Potter we are introduced with a melody that we hear on every intro of the saga, now everytime people who watched the movies hear that they will remember about the films. Also Universal Studios who created a Harry Potter world has the soundtrack melodies on the speaker of the park to create that feeling that you have entered this world.

How is Fantasy Marketed?

Fantasy films are marketed through a variety of strategies that captivate the audiences who are fond of mistical realities through visual aspects in the trailers. Trailers showcast the most exciting moments o the film being; iconic setting like a castle or something expecific that represents the film, battles, supernatural creatures and special effects. Posters often highlight fantasy elements or symbols like dragons, swords, castles etc. Merch is also very used in marketing films, fantansy merchandise are normally used of toys, games, collection items or clothing. The marketing team also focuses on Fan engagement through conventions like Comic-Con, social media events, and online fandom communities.

Samples:

Maleficent (2014) is a live-action fantasy film that reenvisions the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of its iconic villain. The film embodies the concepts of fantasy throught its use of magic, mythical creatures, and a enchanted kingdom. Maleficent is a powerful fairy with supernatural abilites, she lives in a mystical forest that feature other supernatural beings. The film uses a lot of CGI and special effects to create the magical atmosphere of a real enchating world of magic. The story also employs classic themes like good versus evil, betrayal and redemption.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023) is a fantasy adventure series that brings Rick Riordan’s mythological book world to life. The story begins with Percy, a modern-day boy who discovers he is a demigod, the son of Poseidon, and comes across to a hidden world filled with Greek gods, monsters, and magic. Fantasy elements used are magical profecies, greek mythical creatures, magical weapons and the idea that a different world exist then the ordinary one. Characters go into battle with iconic greek creatures like minotaurs and hydras and travel to Mount Olympus and the Underworld, well known locations from the greek mythology. The production used CGI and visual effects to create the mystical creatures and iconic locations like the underworld. I saw some documentaries of how they spend months creating the creatures so they look real and accurate to the description of the books.
